A 1979 graduate of Franklin County High School received a football scholarship to Virginia Tech and was a member of the Hokies team.
In 1980, he joined the Franklin County Sheriff's Department as a corrections officer. He worked his way up to road deputy and then investigator.
In 1984, he was the lead investigator on the C.W. Bousman murder, in which a capital murder conviction was handed down. It was the first capital murder case in the county since reinstatement of the death penalty.
From 1988 until 2007 he served as captain of the department responsible for the road deputies.
Overton is a graduate of the FBI Academy and the Virginia Forensic Science Academy. He also earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Bluefield College.
He and his wife, the former Nancy Bussey who is the daughter of Judy and the late Bobby Bussey, live just outside Rocky Mount.
The Overtons are members of Franklin Heights Baptist Church.
The couple has three children -- Joshua, and twin daughters, Courtney and Casey .
The Sheriff's Office maintains a number of internal divisions within the organization that deliver a variety of law related services to more than 56,000 citizens of the County. Uniformed personnel also ensure that more than 728 square miles of land mass and waterways are provided with a marked police presence on a daily basis.
Their offices are located beside the Courthouse Complex at 70 East Court Street, Rocky Mount, Virginia.
